In this project, we investigate the relationship between locomotion and visual overview on a user’s spatial memory. It is known that users can use their sense of spatial memory to organize and recall the location of information in a virtual space. However, what happens to this ability if the view of the virtual space is constrained to a small peephole instead of a complete overview of the space? Moreover, what if the user cannot physically move around while organizing and recalling the information?

This project was the brain child of Yvonne and Kasper. It had long been collecting dust when they brought me in to handle the practicalities of the study. I implemented the study software and arranged and supervised the running of the study. It’s the largest study I have been involved in to date, with over 80 participants engaging in hour-long experiment sessions in the lab. It was quite the feat of logistics to get it done on time, and a special mention goes to the student workers who acted as experimenters.
